New report warns of growing national security threat to U.S. as China builds AI: 'Significant and concerning'

FOX News

FIRST ON FOX: A pro-tech advocacy group has released a new report warning of the growing threat posed by China's artificial intelligence technology and its open-source approach that could threaten the national and economic security of the United States. The report, published by American Edge Project, states that "China is rapidly advancing its own open-source ecosystem as an alternative to American technology and using it as a Trojan horse to implant its CCP values into global infrastructure." "Their progress is both significant and concerning: Chinese-developed open-source AI tools are already outperforming Western models on key benchmarks, while operating at dramatically lower costs, accelerating global adoption. Through its Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), which spans more than 155 countries on four continents, and its Digital Silk Road (DSR), China is exporting its technology worldwide, fostering increased global dependence, undermining democratic norms, and threatening U.S. leadership and global security." The report outlines how Chinese AI models censor historical events that could paint China in a bad light, deny or minimize human rights abuses, and filter criticism of Chinese political leaders.

Ukraine's Black Sea drone attacks signal expansion in conflict

The Japan Times

The footprint of Russian President Vladimir Putin's war on Ukraine is growing fast after a weekend in which sea drones crippled a Russian naval vessel and oil tanker. For the first time, the attacks put at risk Russia's commodity exports via the Black Sea, a route that accounts for most of the grain and 15% to 20% of the oil Russia sells daily on global markets. Significantly higher insurance and shipping costs are likely to follow for Moscow, but there are risks to European and global markets, too. The expansion comes as Ukraine's counteroffensive advances more slowly than Kyiv officials planned, and as Saudi Arabia's attempt to catalyze peace talks by hosting a multinational conference showed just how hard it is likely to be to end the bloodshed on terms both sides can accept.

Two days in the Bay

#artificialintelligence

It was genuinely a bit surreal seeing deep green hills in the South Bay last week. Growing up in Fremont, I know the change from brown to green is about as close as we get to having seasons, but it's been so long since I've seen them, I'd genuinely forgotten they can exist. It's an understatement to say that the return of rain has been something of a mixed blessing in Northern California. I know several people who are still reeling from the recent floods, but this brave new world to which we all belong seems to only operate in extremes when it comes to the weather. Since returning home to Queens for a few days (I fly out for Mobile World Congress on Friday), several people have commented about how nice it must have been to get out of the cold in February. These are all people who, presumably, have never been to Northern California.

Global Media Awards 2023: K-Start-ups shine at CES - Startup World Tech

#artificialintelligence

On January 7, the K-Start-ups attending the Consumer Entertainment Show, or CES in Las Vegas were awarded with the Global Media Awards 2023. They were selected in advance by press media from Europe, South Korea, Japan and the US as outstanding domestic innovators in attendance of the event. The awards were given based on the competitiveness, how likely they are to successfully enter the global market, how marketable they are and the investment value. The ceremony was held in the K-Startup Joint Pavilion. This year, the size of CES grew by an amazing 50% compared to 2022, with more than 2,800 companies attending from 173 countries around the world.

AI and the global energy transition

#artificialintelligence

The Fourth Industrial Revolution – artificial intelligence in particular – has the potential to solve some of the current conundrums of the green transition. Over the last two centuries, the world's major energy transitions were driven primarily by technological breakthroughs. The steam engine allowed coal to fuel the Industrial Revolution and displaced traditional biomass in the world energy mix. Then the internal combustion engine opened the door for oil to dominate the transport sector and the global energy mix for decades – a position it still holds to date. Today, one major development is still unfolding; its final impact is difficult to predict or even comprehend at this stage.

US puts Chinese drone giant DJI on military ties blacklist

Al Jazeera

The United States Defense Department (DoD) has added more than a dozen Chinese companies, including the world's largest drone manufacturer, to a blacklist of firms with alleged ties to the Chinese military, clearing the way for restrictions on their business. Shenzhen-based DJI Technology, which is estimated to control more than half of the global market for commercial drones, is among the 13 firms added to the blacklist released by the Pentagon on Wednesday. The blacklist grants the US president authority to impose sanctions against companies deemed to have connections to the Chinese military. The announcement comes after the US Treasury Department last year banned US-based persons from trading shares of DJI and seven other Chinese companies over their alleged involvement in the surveillance of ethnic minority Uighurs in China's far-western region of Xinjiang. BGI Genomics Co, a genetic testing company; CRRC Corp, which manufactures rolling stock; and Zhejiang Dahua Technology, a Hangzhou-based surveillance equipment maker, were also added to the updated list.

RT/ Using AI to train teams of robots to work together

#artificialintelligence

The global market for robots is expected to grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of around 26 percent to reach just under 210 billion U.S. dollars by 2025. When communication lines are open, individual agents such as robots or drones can work together to collaborate and complete a task. But what if they aren't equipped with the right hardware or the signals are blocked, making communication impossible? University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign researchers started with this more difficult challenge. They developed a method to train multiple agents to work together using multi-agent reinforcement learning, a type of artificial intelligence.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) in Genomics: Global Market
